As part of your Abbey Museum Ticket with Church Tour, you'll be led by a tour guide as you step into the adjoining Abbey Church, a serene and sacred space where history and art converge in breathtaking colour. Here, one of Australia’s most remarkable collections of medieval and Renaissance stained glass awaits, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic and spiritual traditions of Europe’s great church builders.
These glorious windows, many dating from the 14th to 16th centuries and sourced from historic ecclesiastical contexts in England and Continental Europe, are more than decorative panels of coloured glass. They were created at a time when such works were regarded as “the art of light,” with every hue and shape designed to transform sunlight into a visible symbol of the divine. In the Middle Ages, stained glass was understood as a medium that brought sacred stories to life, illuminating biblical scenes, saints, heraldry and theological symbolism for all who entered the church.
Whether you’re a lover of art, history or spiritual architecture, the stained glass tour reveals how light, colour and story combine to create one of the most poetic artistic traditions of the medieval world.
Church Tours are available on Tuesday and Thursdays, and hosted by a volunteer tour guide.
