Throughout the medieval era, Knighthood and the virtues of Chivalry were interwoven within each knight, as an idealisation of the knightly values and ethics. The tales of Arthurian knights, like Gawain and Lancelot, as well as historical knights, like William Marshall and Edward the Black Prince, resonate throughout as the Flowers of Chivalry, upholding the ideals of the Order of Chivalry.

Alongside the concept of Chivalry, knightly orders formed to connect like-minded men and women in a common goal, to uphold the tenants of Chivalry so that it may never come into dispute, with some of these orders continuing to this day, such as the English Order of the Garter, or the French Order of the Star.

Though many within chivalric orders were knights, women played an important role, as members, patrons and supporters of Chivalrous Orders, with records showing 68 women being inducted to the Order of the Garter from 1358 to 1488, before being reintroduced in 1901, with the induction of Queen Alexandra.

Though not holding the rank of knight, women were no less important, having played critical roles in maintaining the Order of Chivalry, and embodying knightly virtues. This Abbey, Companie Draco Routiers will showcase an induction ceremony, seeing a lady of note be recognised for her contribution to historical reenactment within their community, and join a knightly order founded within Companie Draco Routiers, the Order of the Golden Wyvern.

This year, we will be recognising the efforts of Lady Alice Wright, who has been an experienced and valued member of Companie Draco Routiers, and will be
celebrated for her contribution to the community.

The ceremony is taken from historical records of ceremonies conducted in the 14th century, with elements drawn directly from Ramon Llulls 'Book of the Order of
Chivalry', recommended reading for anyone wishing to uphold Chivalry in its entirety.

Be our honoured guest as we celebrate and recognise Lady Alice for her service!
